The Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site Wins the Cultural Heritage Awards
The Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site is proud to announce that it has won the Cultural Heritage Prize 2025 for its permanent exhibition Fishing Pleasures.
This award, presented by Culture Bas-Saint-Laurent, highlights the innovation and quality of work in showcasing the intangible heritage of salmon fishing. The Fishing Pleasures exhibition offers a unique immersive and auditory experience, where two characters inspired by local history introduce visitors to the traditions, expertise, and contemporary issues related to this emblematic practice.
"This award is above all a collective recognition," emphasizes Marie-Laurence Giroux, President of the Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site. "It reflects the attachment of the people of Matapédia to their history and heritage, and encourages us to continue our mission of protection and transmission."
On the other hand, Édith Ouellette, the director, points out that this project is the result of extensive collaboration: "Fishing Pleasures is a true fishing story, told with heart and authenticity. We warmly thank the team of Laurent-Michel Tremblay, the scenographer, our collaborators, the Mi'gmaq communities, as well as the volunteers and citizens who have contributed to enriching this project."
The Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site also wishes to thank Culture Bas-Saint-Laurent and the jury for this recognition, which helps to showcase the regional heritage and strengthen the collective sense of pride.
