Philippe Giroux is exhibiting at the Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site this summer!
The Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site is pleased to welcome Philippe Giroux to the museum. The Matane artist will exhibit his paintings from June 8 to September 2, 2024. The exhibition project consists of a series of works related to waters, as well as salmon fishing.
Philippe Giroux, an Academic Officer within the Mondial Art Académia and a signatory member of the Figurative Arts Institute, paints realistic to hyper-realistic canvases with smooth acrylic applications. He paints streams, crystal-clear Gaspesian rivers, and salmon fishing. The streams inspire him with the multitude of micro-landscapes he discovers during hikes. He takes pleasure in painting materials such as water, wood, roots, stone, rocks, and the veils of moss that dress them. The artist favors strong contrasts in his work and constantly seeks to capture the movement, calmness, or power of currents, as well as the transparency of water.
This project is part of the temporary visual arts exhibitions that we aim to carry out each year with various artists. The idea is to present to the public different ways of perceiving the museum's themes, including the material and immaterial heritage of salmon fishing, local history, and architectural heritage.
“Mr. Giroux's works depict hyper-realistic fishing scenes, something that locals and fishing enthusiasts are familiar with. As a museum institution, our mission is to showcase the heritage of salmon fishing, especially through its dissemination to the public. Mr. Giroux's paintings align very well with this idea.” says Édith Ouellette, General Director of the Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site.
Founded in 1873 by businessman Lord Mount Stephen, the Matamajaw Salmon Club was one of the most famous private salmon fishing camps in the province. Located along the Matapedia and Causapscal rivers, the luxurious establishment welcomed members and guests until its acquisition by the government of Quebec in the 1970s. The Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site has been a classified cultural property by the Ministry of Culture and Communications since 1984 and a museum institution since 1989. Since 2019, the museum has benefited from financial support from the Museum Institutions Assistance Program (PAFIM).
