A complementary youth experience to the permanent exhibition is launched this summer at the Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site
The Matamajaw Fishing Heritage Site is proud to present Lulu the dragonfly to the public. This river queen is the protagonist of our new youth course, open to everyone since June 8, 2024, and inaugurated on June 20. Dedicated to children, the museum is very proud to offer a museum product that stands out and adds value to its permanent exhibition, inaugurated in 2023.
"It is with immense pride that the management and the Board of Directors invite the public to the launch of this new youth course. Over the past years, we have made it our mission to restore our heritage, diversify our activities, and modernize our permanent exhibition to showcase and rediscover this jewel of Matapédia, this unique richness that is Matamajaw," stated General Director Édith Ouellette.
The realization of this innovative project is made possible by the indispensable financial support of various partners: Desjardins Caisse de la Vallée de la Matapédia, the Causapscal Development Commission, and the La Matapédia Regional County Municipality.
Founded in 1873 by businessman Lord Mount Stephen, the Matamajaw Salmon Club was one of the most famous private salmon fishing camps in the province. Bordering the Matapédia and Causapscal rivers, the luxurious establishment welcomed members and guests until its acquisition by the government of Quebec in the 1970s. The Matamajaw Fishing Heritage Site is a classified cultural property by the Ministry of Culture and Communications since 1984 and has been a museum institution since 1989. The museum has benefited from the financial support of the Assistance Program for Museum Institutions (PAFIM) since 2019.
