A New Collections Storage for the Museum

The Matamajaw Museum recently held the official opening of its new collections storage facility in the presence of its Board of Directors. This achievement marks an important milestone in the museum’s development and reflects its commitment to its mission of preserving, showcasing and sharing the history and heritage of salmon fishing in La Matapédia.

When the permanent exhibition renewal project was launched in 2020, the lack of a suitable collections storage facility was identified as a significant gap. Although the museum holds a collection of heritage objects that tell the story of Matamajaw, it did not have a dedicated space designed to ensure their preservation and organization under appropriate conditions.

Today, that gap has finally been filled. Thanks to the work completed over the past few weeks, the Matamajaw Museum now has a space better suited to the needs of its collections. This new facility will improve preservation conditions, facilitate artifact management and better protect these precious reminders of our history for future generations.

“We are extremely proud of the work accomplished. Establishing a collections storage facility had been an important need for the Museum for several years. Today, we are taking another step forward in our efforts to improve our museum practices and ensure the long-term preservation of our collections. This is an achievement our entire team can be proud of,” says Édith Ouellette, Executive Director of the Matamajaw Museum.

The creation of the new collections storage facility was made possible through financial support from the Government of Canada. The Matamajaw Museum wishes to express its gratitude for this valuable contribution, which enables it to improve preservation conditions for its collections and continue its mission of preserving heritage and passing it on to future generations.
