The Matamajaw Fishing Heritage Site is initiating a strategic planning process for 2026–2030
The Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site is undertaking an important strategic planning process that will guide its actions for the coming years. The objective is to collectively envision the future of the museum and assert its role as a leading museum institution in La Matapédia.
After fully restoring its buildings between 2020 and 2022 and renewing its permanent exhibition in 2023, the museum is now entering a new stage of its development. In a context where museum institutions must constantly reinvent themselves to remain relevant and engaged in their community, the Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site aims to consolidate its position as a cultural, heritage, and identity driver in the region.
To carry out this reflection, the museum has commissioned Mr. Frédéric Vincent, an organizational development consultant. He has previously assisted the Musée acadien du Québec in Bonaventure, La Vieille Usine de l'Anse-à-Beaufils, and the Manoir Le Boutillier in similar projects. The process, made possible with the financial support of Tourisme Gaspésie, will span several months and involve members of the board of directors, the team, partners, and the local population of Matapédia.
In this regard, a survey will be available from November 17 to December 7, 2025 to gather the perceptions, expectations, and ideas of citizens regarding the museum and its role in the region. The link to the survey will be shared on social media and the museum's website, and a QR code will provide easy access. The goal is to obtain over 200 responses from Matapédia residents wishing to contribute to this collective reflection.
"The Matamajaw Heritage Fishing Site is a place of memory and identity, but also a vibrant space that evolves with its community. This strategic planning process will be an opportunity to jointly build a shared vision for the years to come," says Édith Ouellette, director of Matamajaw.
The result of this process will be revealed in 2026, after extensive collaboration.
